JOB: Art Galleries at Black Studies at UT Austin

Purpose 

To oversee the daily operations of the Art Galleries at Black Studies’ (AGBS) galleries, supervising student gallery staff, and maintaining internal calendars and communications related to tours, events, and other use of AGBS gallery spaces. Other responsibilities include developing and leading exhibition tours and/or other forms of educational programming and activities, as well as managing AGBS social media

Responsibilities

  • Programming and tour management: Maintain AGBS tour calendar and share regular updates about tours and events with gallery staff. Coordinate and manage tour groups as needed.  Develop and lead exhibition-based tours or educational activities, such as workshops and other events, in dialogue with AGBS staff.  Provide logistical support for in-gallery events and programs.
  • Gallery operations: Oversee AGBS daily gallery operations, including opening, closing, and daily maintenance of exhibitions, and provides front desk reception duties as needed.  Coordinate requests and access to galleries for UT faculty, students, staff, donors, and the public during and outside regular visiting hours.  Maintain gallery staff handbook, updating handbook regularly with information pertaining to general policies and procedures, exhibition-specific procedures, daily/weekly schedules, staff contact information, exhibition-related content, etc.
  • Manage student gallery staff: Hire, schedule, train, and supervise student gallery staff during regular visiting hours, installation periods, and special events.  Approve timesheets for hours worked for payroll.
  • Social media management: Manage AGBS social media and create a calendar of scheduled posts with help of AGBS staff
  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Art or related program. At least 5 years of related experience in program administration/coordination. Excellent verbal and written communication/interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail/multitasking abilities. Promotes collaborative climate that recognizes, celebrates, and rewards diversity. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to work effectively within a team. Demonstrated professional demeanor and personal initiative

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

General museum or cultural institution experience. One to three years managerial experience in a museum/gallery setting. Educational background or interest in arts/cultural management, art education, art history, or related field. Familiarity with the AGBS’ mission and programming. Experience managing social media accounts.

Salary Range

$50,000 + depending on qualifications

The Tyson Scholars of American Art Program at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art
The Tyson Scholars of American Art Program encourages and supports full-time, interdisciplinary scholarship that seeks to expand boundaries and traditional categories of investigation into American art and visual and material culture from the any time period. The program was established in 2012 through a $5 million commitment from the Tyson family and Tyson Foods, Inc. Since its inception, the Tyson Scholars Program has supported the work of 66 scholars, attracting academic professionals in a variety of disciplines nationally and internationally.

Crystal Bridges and the Tyson Scholars Program invites PhD candidates (or equivalent), post-doctoral researchers, and senior scholars from any field who are researching American art to apply. Scholars may be focused on architecture, craft, material culture, performance art, and new media. We also invite applications from scholars approaching US art transregionally and looking at the broader geographical context of the Americas, especially including Latinx and Indigenous art. Applications will be evaluated on the originality and quality of the proposed research project and its contribution to a more equitable and inclusive history of American art.

The Tyson Scholars Program looks for research projects that will intersect meaningfully with the museum’s collections, library resources, architecture, grounds, curatorial expertise, programs and exhibitions; and/or the University of Arkansas faculty broadly; and applicants should speak to why residence in Northwest Arkansas and the surrounding areas will advance their work. The applicant’s academic standing, scholarly qualifications, and experience will be considered, as it informs the ability of the applicant to complete the proposed project. Letters of support are strongest when they demonstrate the applicant’s excellence, promise, originality, track record, and productivity as a scholar, not when the letter contains a commentary on the project.

Crystal Bridges is dedicated to an equitable, inclusive, and diverse cohort of fellows. Fellowships are residential and support full-time writing and research for terms that range from six weeks to nine months. While in residence, Tyson Scholars have access to the art and library collections of Crystal Bridges as well as the library and archives at the University of Arkansas in nearby Fayetteville. Stipends vary depending on the duration of residency, position as senior scholar, post-doctoral scholar, or pre-doctoral scholar, and range from $17,000 to $34,000 per semester, plus provided housing. The residency includes $1,500 for relocation, and additional research funds upon application. Scholars are provided workspace in the curatorial wing of the Crystal Bridges Library. The workspace is an enclosed area shared with other Tyson Scholars. Scholars are provided with basic office supplies, desk space, an office chair, space on a bookshelf, and a locking cabinet with key for personal belongings and files. Housing is provided in a fully furnished, shared four-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment within walking distance of the museum. Each scholar will have their own bedroom and ensuite bathroom with shared living room and kitchen.

SYMP: Present Coordinates @ Boston University

Boston University’s Department of the History of Art & Architecture is pleased to invite the Boston-area community to African American Art History: Present Coordinates, a symposium of research conducted by emerging scholars in the field of African American art history and architecture. Five advanced doctoral students from across the nation will present their research on BU’s Charles River Campus, on November 11th and 12th, 2022. Dr. Melanee C. Harvey (GRS ’17), Associate Professor of Art History, Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, Howard University, will give the keynote lecture on Friday, November 11th. CFP: Terra Foundation Convening Grants

Recognizing current and historical inequities in the presentations and understandings of American art history, the Terra Foundation encourages convenings that address these imbalances and exclusions at institutions worldwide. Grant funding is available for programs that foster exchange and collaboration, such as workshops, symposia, and colloquia.

Programs should advance innovative and experimental research and professional practice in American art and address critical issues facing the field. We also welcome requests for convenings intended to inform projects in their early stages, which will benefit from the learning and practice that can be developed through dialogue.

This program is open to organizations within and outside of the United States. Convenings held in person and/or online are eligible for support.

Join renowned photographers Frank Stewart and Chester Higgins, Jr., in a conversation moderated by Dalila Scruggs, Curator of Photography and Prints at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, who will discuss their relationship with the acclaimed African-American artist, Romare Bearden, and their experiences photographing African-American artists and culture over the years. 

This event celebrates the initial release of the Romare Bearden Papers by the Wildenstein Plattner Institute (WPI). The WPI has worked closely with the Romare Bearden Foundation to make the artist’s archival collection accessible to the public in anticipation of the forthcoming Romare Bearden Digital Catalogue Raisonné

Frank Stewart shot his first photographs at the 1963 March on Washington and has gone on to make compelling images ever since. Stewart earned a BFA in photography from Cooper Union in 1975 and counts Roy DeCarava, Garry Winogrand, Jack Whitten, and Romare Bearden amongst his mentors. Stewart was the first photographer-in-residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem, where he also taught photography. He has been a member of Kamoinge, Inc. since 1982, and was the lead photographer for Jazz at Lincoln Center almost three decades. Stewart is widely published, has had more than thirty solo exhibitions and is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards. His work is held in the collections of major museums including Bowdoin College Art Museum, Brunswick, Maine, the Detroit Institute of Arts; George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the National Museum of African American Art and Culture, Washington, DC, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. Stewart is the subject of an upcoming retrospective titled, Nexus: An American Photographer’s Journey, 1960’s to the Present, that opens at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, in June 2023.

Chester Higgins Jr. is a photographer known for his eloquent images of the life and culture of African Americans and the people of the African Diaspora. He counts P. H. Polk, Arthur Rothstein, Cornell Capa, Gordon Parks and Romare Bearden amongst his mentors. He was a staff photographer for the New York Times from 1975 to 2014. Widely published, his photographs have appeared in magazines including Ebony, Essence, Fortune, LIFE, Look, Newsweek, and TIME, and in several books including Sacred Nile, Echo of the Spirit and Elder Grace. His work has appeared in numerous solo exhibitions, most recently The Indelible Spirit at the Bruce Silverstein Gallery. He has received fellowships and grants  from the International Center of Photography, The Ford Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. His photographs are included in the following permanent collections: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Richmond, the Library of Congress, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York.

Dalila Scruggs is Curator for Photography and Prints at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. She earned a Ph.D. in Art History from Harvard University, where she focused on African American art. She has held curatorial positions at the Williams College Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum, and served as the Brooklyn Museum’s Museum Education Fellowship Coordinator.


The Wildenstein Plattner Institute, Inc. (WPI) is a non-profit foundation dedicated to the study of art history and to fostering the accessibility, cataloguing, and digitization of archival materials that support critical research in the field.

JOB: Asst Prof, Modern/Contemporary @ Providence College

Providence College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in the Department of Art and Art History at the assistant professor level, beginning August 1, 2023. We seek an interdisciplinary teacher-scholar who specializes in the chronological era from c.1800 to the present. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in Modern and Contemporary Art, participation in a team-taught Survey, advanced undergraduate seminars, and Methods and Senior Thesis courses on a rotating basis. We welcome research and courses that center intersectional approaches to Modern and Contemporary art and media and also may be cross-listed with Women’s and Gender Studies, Black Studies, American Studies, Global Studies, Latin American and Latinx Studies, Asian Studies, Communication, and other departments such as Theater, Dance, and Film; English; Political Science, etc, depending on the expertise and interests of the person hired. Cooperation and coordination with our thriving PC Galleries’ exhibitions and programming is also desired. Collegial interaction and engagement with students in our Studio Art program is also important to the position.

The Department of Art History at the University of Chicago invites applications for an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department seeks applicants with innovative approaches to scholarship in the modern and contemporary history of architecture, urbanism, and/or the built environment, who also exhibit an ambitious research agenda and a commitment to developing pedagogical techniques for teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND MUSEUMS
The University of Richmond Museums, which resides within the School of Arts and Sciences, consists of the Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art, the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center, and the Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature. The annual Museums operating budget is $1.1 million and the Executive Director supervises eight staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The chosen candidate will:

Demonstrate strategic leadership with an ability to clearly and compellingly articulate a viable, resonating vision that can attract widespread support among students, faculty, staff within the School of Arts and Sciences, and University-wide.
Direct and coordinate the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of corporate, foundation and individual donors, or capital campaign initiatives to ensure the Museums has the financial resources needed to accomplish its mission and ensure long term sustainability.
Build strong relationships among faculty, staff and other key stakeholders in order to maximize the learning outcomes for students inside and outside the classroom.
Develop, mentor, empower and hire a diverse staff to think, plan and act in a collaborative, inclusive and innovative manner consistent with UR mission;  manage staff effectively to ensure excellence in collections, exhibits, on-site and outreach education, development, retail and marketing, communications and facilities and to create engaging and relevant museum content and experiences for 21st century audiences.
Serve as the external face of the Museums in building its profile as a distinctive UR asset and source of and innovation within the University and regionally. This will involve building and cultivating mutually beneficial partnerships with a variety of organizations representing the museums, tourism, business  and academic communities regionally and nationally as appropriate.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:  An advanced degree in the visual arts, museum studies, material culture and/or a commensurate degree.

Experience:
Minimum of five years of executive administrative experience, ideally within an academic museum organization.
Strong leadership skills and ability to develop and sustain a clarity of vision and strategic focus; ability to balance competing demands well; effectively plan, establish, articulate, and maintain effective organizational and operational priorities.
Experience in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Ability to analyze complex financial statements and statistical data.
Demonstrated ability to advocate for the arts on and off campus; excellent writing and speaking skills; knowledge of trends in arts and arts management, particularly in academic environment.
