FULL-TIME FACULTY IN ART HISTORY, THEORY, AND CRITICISM

The Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure track faculty member to begin in August of 2017.

This position is for a historian of African American Art with additional expertise in methodologies, theories, and historiography. Preference will be given to scholars who study the diverse forms and communities of African-American art, and who can demonstrate familiarity with issues of diaspora, migration, and networks of global exchange. This faculty position will play a role in the department’s continued expansion of the intellectual conversation of the field of art and design history at SAIC.

A substantive record of scholarship is expected of senior candidates, as is the promise of continued publication and research output for all applicants.

Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and are commensurate with level of practice, scholarship, and current academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.

The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations in the field.

PROGRAM PROFILE

The Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism, one of 23 departments at the school, is comprised of sixteen full-time art historians specializing in modern and contemporary art and design. Together with 50 part-time faculty, the department currently offers 225 courses, and mentors 30 dedicated MA in Modern and Contemporary Art History students, undergraduate students pursuing a dedicated BA in Art History, and dual-degree graduate students earning an MA in Arts Administration and Policy in conjunction with their MA in Art History. RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will contribute to the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism’s MA and BA programs in Art History, providing undergraduate courses, graduate seminars, and master’s thesis supervision. The candidate will also be an active participant in the education of studio artists, designers, architects, and arts professionals at the MFA, MA and BFA levels and will contribute to the vibrant and creative culture of a research-oriented department in a prestigious art school. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to research, publication, and outstanding teaching. The successful candidate must be capable of performing administrative duties, and provide vision and direction as the department chair on a rotating basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. or ABD is required, some teaching experience preferred for junior candidates. Senior candidates must show evidence of substantial teaching experience. Evidence of on-going research and continued publication trajectory expected. Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and are commensurate with quality of scholarship or practice, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing. Full-time faculty are awarded a twelve-month contract with benefits.

Within the framework of the ‚International Museum Fellowship’ program run by the German Federal Culture Foundation, the Gay Museum will announce a fellowship on April 1st, 2016.
With its highly regarded exhibitions, archival holdings, numerous contributions to research and more than thirty-five (mostly volunteer) staff, the Schwules Museum* has, since its founding in 1985, grown into one of the world’s largest and most significant institutions for archiving, researching and communicating the history and culture of LGBTIQ communities. Different exhibitions and events have taken diverse approaches to lesbian, gay, trans*, bi- and intersexual and queer biographies, themes and concepts in history, art and culture.
In over 150 special exhibitions shown over the past 30 years, the museum has presented a broad spectrum of perspectives on the history of homosexual cultures. Being over 500m2, the museum has at its disposal one of the largest archives in the world, which includes more than 1000 metres of archive material (files, newspaper cut outs, videos, posters, photographs, paintings, sculptures and so on). Within the framework of the project, specially chosen items from the archives and selected exhibition projects should undergo a critical examination. Using an intersectional perspective, the ways in which European colonialism was interwoven with cultural discourses of homosexual emancipation should be examined. Questions should be posed regarding the ways in which exhibition practices and collection strategies engage in critical self-reflection.
The results will be presented in an exhibition or as an intervention in the new permanent exhibition which is currently being planned. This presentation will be part of a program which places particular value on participative practices. The proposal is directed at academics and curators from outside of Germany with the following profile:
– A completed degree in cultural studies or a related field.
– In-depth knowledge of Gender Studies/ Queer Theory/ Postcolonial Studies/ Critical Whiteness Studies.
– Experience in archive-based research.
– Curatorial experience, particularly in the area of cultural history.
– Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including (archival) data base programs.
– Languages: Written and spoken English, German to C1 level.
The Fellowship involves full-time work (100%) for a duration of 18 months, remuneration is based on TV-L 13/1, and work will be based in Berlin.

The Winston & Carolyn Lowe Curatorial Fellowship for Diversity in the Fine Arts (Lowe Curatorial Fellowship) at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia, PA offers the opportunity for a highly qualified candidate with outstanding credentials to gain professional curatorial experience at a nationally renowned museum of American Art affiliated with a degree-granting fine arts art school.  One of the main goals of the Fellowship is to enhance diversity by focusing recruitment efforts on under-represented groups in America  in the curatorial profession.

JOB: Senior Curator @ The Columbus Museum (GA)

The Columbus Museum, an art and regional history museum, seeks a Senior Curator for one of the largest museums in the Southeast. The Museum has a collection of 18th- to– 21st century American art, decorative arts, and contemporary design, as well as a collection of historical artifacts related to the Lower Chattahoochee Valley. The art collection, for which the Senior Curator is responsible, includes works by Charles Willson Peale, Gilbert Stuart, Sanford Gifford, Robert Duncanson, John Twachtman, Paul Manship, Stuart Davis, Robert Motherwell, Louise Nevelson, Alma Thomas, Dale Chihuly, Kara Walker, and Bill Viola. The museum’s grounds feature the beautiful Bradley-Olmsted Garden, designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm in the 1920s for homeowner and noted industrialist W. C. Bradley. The Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

As part of the museum’s senior management team, the Senior Curator reports to the Director and leads a departmental staff of six that includes the curator of history, registrars, an exhibition coordinator and preparators. The Museum recently adopted a five-year strategic plan that calls for reinstallation of the galleries; greater integration between the art and history collections; new, engaging interpretations of objects in the collection; and appealing and thoughtful special exhibitions and programs. The Columbus Museum has an annual operating budget of $2.7 million and endowments that provide funds for acquisitions. The museum is part of the Muscogee County School District, which contributes 42% of the annual operating funds. The Columbus Museum offers free admission.

The Senior Curator has the opportunity to make important contributions to the fields of historic and/or contemporary American art through new scholarship and publications and to have significant impact on visitors’ understanding of art and history. In addition to organizing exhibitions, researching the collection, and recommending acquisitions, the Senior Curator works with the Board’s collections committee and develops and oversees the departmental budget.

With a population of 204,000, Columbus is the second largest city in Georgia. It is experiencing a renaissance that includes revitalization of its beautiful and historic downtown riverfront. The Department of Art & Art History and the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art are collaborating to create a course of study that prepares the next generation of African American art historians and curators. The Department of Art & Art History invites applications for a two-year Visiting Professor in American art with sub-specialties in African American, women in art and curatorial studies beginning Fall 2015.
