JOB: Director of Temple Contemporary

The Tyler School of Art and Architecture invites applicants for the position of Director of Temple Contemporary, the school’s center for exhibitions and public programs. This position is an uncommon opportunity for an individual to bring progressive leadership to a contemporary gallery in a school of art and architecture with nationally ranked programs situated within a research university, Temple University.

We see this as a highly creative, hands-on position that requires an essential understanding of contemporary art and visual culture, and the collaborative and communication skills to work effectively across disciplines with constituencies within and beyond the school. We are looking for a leader who will build a distinctive intellectual vision for the gallery. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, creativity, be passionate about arts advocacy, be fluent in contemporary arts discourse, have experience in fundraising, and be able to work in collaborative and dynamic ways with a diverse group of faculty, students and staff and members of our surrounding community.

Main Responsibilities of the Position
The Director of Temple Contemporary is responsible for generating and organizing a yearly series of vital exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and other programs. The director will be expected to consider the educational needs and goals of the academic programs at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture as well as actively engage with students, faculty, artists, scholars, alumni, and the public.

• Develop and maintain a dynamic vision for Temple Contemporary in collaboration with faculty, staff, students, and advisory committees.
• Engage in productive partnerships and collaborative relationships that enrich the educational and cultural life of the school, university, arts community, and general community.
• Create interdisciplinary activities that serves pedagogical, research and outreach interests of the students and faculty.
• Work with faculty to develop responsive programs that are integrated with academic coursework at Tyler.
• Manage, operate, and oversee 3,400 square foot gallery facility.
• Lead the effort to generate contributed income from private, public, governmental, and internal university sources.
• Develop and manage budgets for Temple Contemporary.
• Supervise Temple Contemporary staff of two to three full-time members, graduate assistants, and work study students.
• Maintain a dynamic media presence to promote Temple Contemporary in collaboration with Tyler’s communications staff.
• Support MFA thesis exhibitions.
• Coordinate Temple Contemporary’s Youth Advisory Council and general Advisory Council.

Education and Experience
• MFA in Visual Arts, MA in Museum/Curatorial Studies, MA in Art History/Museum
Management/Administration or equivalent
• Three to five years of experience in museum or gallery curating or programming.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Qualifications – Required
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
• Hands-on experience with the practical processes of supporting exhibitions from proposal to de-installation
• Demonstrated ability to produce exhibition publications, gallery text and promotional materials

JOB: Visiting Asst Prof, Islamic World/Ancient @ Kenyon College

Kenyon College invites applications for a two-year, full-time Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History beginning August 2024. The area of specialization is open, but candidates with teaching expertise in the arts of the Islamic world or Ancient Art of any region before 600 CE are especially encouraged to apply. We are interested in teacher-scholars who can offer creative ways to engage with the Art History Department’s Visual Resources Center, the Blick-Harris Study Collection, The Gund, and regional art museums.

The successful applicant will be able to teach broadly in their field. The selected candidate will teach five total classes per year at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. Applicants should complement, not duplicate, current expertise of the department. The selected candidate may have the opportunity to provide mentorship to honors projects.

JOB: Teaching Asst Prof @ University of Pittsburgh

The Department of History of Art and Architecture (HAA) and the College of General Studies (CGS) at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor (TAP) whose teaching would support majors in both units and the shared general education curriculum. The Department of History of Art and Architecture has a robust undergraduate program that supports three majors in the History of Art and Architecture, Museum Studies, and Architectural Studies. The College of General Studies hosts a related major in Media and Professional Communication. This permanent position, which is outside the tenure stream, may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. 

We are seeking a capacious thinker and innovative teacher whose scholarship engages the histories of art, architecture, design, digital media, and/or visual communication. The Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences has recently implemented a Digital Studies and Methods certificate at the undergraduate level (DSAM). CGS offers a Digital Media curriculum within its Media and Professional Communication track and certificate. We seek a colleague who will contribute to and advance these digital initiatives across schools. In HAA, the TAP will teach a course that meets the core foundation requirement for the DSAM certificate, either “Digital Humanity,” “The Viral Image,” or a comparable course of their design that would expand this curriculum. The TAP will be encouraged to develop another course that builds on their areas of expertise and expands the current offerings of the department.

The department of Art History at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a Bridge to the Faculty postdoctoral Research Associate in the arts of Africa and/or its global diasporas, to begin on August 16, 2024.

The Bridge to Faculty Scholars Program is a UIC postdoctoral program designed to recruit underrepresented scholars, with the goal of transitioning them to tenure-track faculty positions (https://diversity.uic.edu/faculty/bridge-to-faculty/). Successful postdoctoral associates with department approval may have the opportunity to transition to faculty starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. In addition to mentorship within Art History, the research associate will participate in a cohort-based mentoring experience through the Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity, where they will have the opportunity to meet other Bridge to the Faculty Scholars.

This postdoctoral position will bolster a critical and self-reflexive understanding of the discipline of Art History as a product of colonial modernity. Research specialization is open to any time period, but the department is particularly interested in scholars who are committed to recent methodological perspectives and critical engagement with current debates within and beyond the discipline of art history. We are particularly interested in applicants who demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue, theoretical fluency, and research interests that enlarge current faculty strengths. Interest in and capacity to contribute to the department’s program in museum studies is also encouraged.

The successful candidate will be expected to be able to teach one or more survey courses related to the arts of Africa and its global diasporas, such as African Art and Architecture, African American Art, Arts of the Black Atlantic, or other topics of similar breadth, as well as more focused seminars for advanced undergraduate and graduate students on topics related to their specific research interests. The postdoctoral associate will only teach one course per year during an initial one-year term, after which period there is the possibility of transitioning into a tenure-track faculty position with a teaching load of two courses per semester.

The Department of Art History in the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank specializing in the Art and Visual Culture of Africa and the African Diaspora, to start fall 2024. Though the chronological parameters of research are flexible, the committee welcomes applicants whose teaching and scholarship are centered on cross-cultural encounters and exchanges—examining the ways in which art is produced and circulates through networks of trade and immigration, and how its discourse is formed by the dynamics of race, colonialism, post-colonialism, and globalization. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the department’s effort to decolonize curricula. Successful candidates will be expected to have and maintain a strong research agenda. JOB: Asst Prof, Modernity, Science and Society at Smith College

JOB: Prof, Ancient Near Eastern Art at University of Chicago

The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, West Asia & North Africa and the Department of Art History at the University of Chicago invite applications for a Professorship in Ancient Near Eastern Art, with appointment beginning July 1, 2024, or July 1, 2025.

JOB: Endowed Asst or Assoc Prof in Arts of the Americas at University of Arkansas

The Art History Program seeks a faculty member with expertise in research areas integral to the arts of the Americas. The position is open in terms of chronological specialization, and scholars may focus on any aspect of North, Central and/or South American artistic production, or trace cultural convergences linking the Americas to the wider world. Interdisciplinary, intersectional, and transregional approaches centering overlooked or marginalized histories are particularly welcome, as is scholarship that extends beyond current program strengths, including African American, Afro-Latin, Asian American, Indigenous, Latino, and Native American artistic production.

This position is considered fundamental to the implementation of a new MA program in the arts of the Americas, developed in partnership with the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and its contemporary arts satellite, the Momentary. For this and future hires, we seek creative thinkers who will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the intellectual community in the School of Art, Crystal Bridges, and the growing arts ecosystem of Northwest Arkansas.
