The History of Art Department seeks an historian of African Art and visual culture who will teach innovative historical surveys of ancient to contemporary African art, as well as develop more specialized courses.

The successful candidate will contribute to the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences minors, which include African American and Africana Studies and Middle East and North African Studies, and contribute to the department, School, and College and beyond the classroom through committee and college-wide service, engaging in scholarly activities through conference presentations and publications, and demonstrate professional accomplishments in the discipline. The successful candidate will demonstrate familiarity with best-teaching practices including pedagogical innovation, inclusive strategies, and teaching pedagogy that incorporates new technologies.

This faculty position will begin in Fall 2023. Review of applications will commence October 1, 2022 and continue until the position is filled. The salary and appointment rank will be based on education level and cumulative experience. Please note a background check is required for appointment to this position.

JOB: Instructor, African Art @ FIT

Dear colleagues,

At the Fashion Institute of Technology (NYC), we need to find an adjunct instructor for the African art survey classes we are offering in Fall 2022.  These are in-person courses that run from August 29-December 22.  There are two sections offered; ideally the same person would teach both:

HA 223 — African Art and Civilization

Surveys cultures of sub-Saharan Africa. Illustrated lectures present art and architecture in relation to history, religion, economic conditions, and social and political structures.

Mondays, 12-3pm

Tuesdays, 2-5pm

Pay is dependent on experience, but the base rate is $72.08 an hour.  We can recommend step-level increases for teaching experience and for professional activities. A class is three hours for 15 weeks, with an extra week of pay to cover office hours, so 48 hours.  It works out to be about a minimum $3500, if higher steps are awarded then the base rate is higher. Classes are capped at 27, and we expect to have a renegotiated contract by the end of the Spring semester, with wages 7% higher. Our adjunct faculty have the opportunity to join our union, the UCE-FIT which provides a variety of benefits.

At the Fashion Institute of Technology (NYC), we unexpectedly need to find an instructor for the African art survey classes we are offering in Spring 2022.  These are in-person courses that run from January 24-May 16:

HA 223 — African Art and Civilization – Mondays @ 12:10-3pm

Surveys cultures of sub-Saharan Africa. Illustrated lectures present art and architecture in relation to history, religion, economic conditions, and social and political structures.

HA 230 — Modern and Contemporary African Art – Tuesdays @ 6:30-9:20pm

An examination of the history of 20th- and 21st-century African art, from decolonialization movements through contemporary themes. Surveys new artistic practices, schools, and workshops within their historical and artistic contexts.

JOB: Latin and/or Caribbean art and visual culture @ FIT

The History of Art Department seeks an historian of Latin and/or Caribbean art and visual culture who will develop and teach innovative historical surveys covering ancient to contemporary art from the region. Strong preference for candidates with museum or curatorial experience who can contribute to the department’s major, Art History and Museum Professions.

The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute new course offerings to the Liberal Arts minors in the History of Art, Latin American Studies, Caribbean Studies, and/or African American and Africana Studies, and to contribute to the department, School, and College beyond the classroom by participating in committees and college-wide events, engaging in scholarly activity through conference presentations and/or publications.

The new faculty member will benefit from mentoring by working with the department chair and with other department faculty, as well as with the Center for Excellence in Teaching, which anchors a faculty development program for training with online learning systems and for other pedagogical guidance.
