Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Serving as a member of the senior administrative team of the David C. Driskell Center, the Registrar supervises all aspects of registration activities pertaining to the permanent collections, loans, implementation of policies and procedures for acquisition, documentation, inventory, management, and disposition of the permanent collection and other objects in the Center’s custody. The Registrar also manages collections storage and will be the lead staff member on an upcoming migration to a new collections management database.

This is an in-person position. Telework may be available up to two (2) days per week, subject to approval.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE: 3 years of relevant professional experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
– Demonstrated knowledge of professional museum practices, including registration methods, safe object handling and art preservation, packing and shipping, storage of art, security measures, and object numbering techniques.
– Knowledge of and demonstrated skill in collection management databases, Microsoft Word and Excel, and Adobe Photoshop.
– Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.

Preferences:
-MA in Museum Studies or related field preferred.
– Experience in the field of Collections Management, including long-term department and museum planning, supervising staff, and writing and managing budgets.
– Experience with loans, both international and domestic, is a plus.
– Some knowledge in the areas of artwork and items in the Museum’s care is preferred.

Additional Information:
This is a grant-funded, term position for three years. Salary range is $58,656 – $70,000.

JOB: Assistant/Associate Professor of American Art History @ University of Maryland

The Department of Art History & Archaeology at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in American art history, with a specialization or sub-specialization in African American art history.  The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, to begin in the fall of 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates should be able to teach courses in the field of American art history and visual culture, and African American art history, and should demonstrate high scholarly potential.  Candidates’ specialization may fall within any field of American art history inclusively defined, from the Colonial through the modern eras, including the arts of the Atlantic world.  This appointee will actively collaborate with the programming and research initiatives of the University’s David C. Driskell Center for the Study of Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora.  Interest in cross-disciplinary teaching and research with faculty in other fields at the University, as well as collaboration with curators at area museums, will be welcome.  A Ph.D. in Art History or a related field is required for appointment.

Faculty are expected to make significant contributions to knowledge through innovative research and publication, to teach and advise with excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels,  including students from underrepresented groups, and to fulfill reasonable service obligations to the academic and local communities. We are looking for outstanding scholars with an interest in the broad context of the history of American and African American art who are committed to contributing diverse perspectives to the Department, the University, and the community.

JOB: Curator-in-Residence @ The Driskell Center/UMD Art Gallery

Starting in July 2017, the successful candidate will participate in a one-year residency in which they will originate and present two exhibitions and related public programs. The Curator-in-Residence will work closely with the Executive Director of the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland as well as the Assistant Director of The University of Maryland Art Gallery.

The University of Maryland Art Gallery is pleased to launch its first Curator-in-Residence program with the main objective of engaging an experienced curator with The University of Maryland Art Gallery and the community it serves. The successful candidate will curate innovative exhibitions and assist The University of Maryland Art Gallery with developing programs that promote greater accessibility to both the university community and the general public. The Curator-in-Residence will serve as a professional resource for students, local artists, and arts professionals, both at the University of Maryland and in the local communities of Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, and must have a keen interest in understanding and working with university students and artists.

The Curator-in-Residence’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Curate two exhibitions of diverse mediums of professionally highprofile contemporary artists
• Provide content (e.g. checklist, introduction) for catalogues, brochures, press releases, and all related publicity material, etc., as well as prepare didactic text for exhibitions
• Write essays when required for individual exhibition publications
• Suggest and assist with selecting speakers for guest lectures, gallery tours, artist residencies, etc.
• Present a curator talk, at least one per exhibition
• Organize a two-hour seminar in curatorial practices and studies for undergraduate and graduate students, one per semester
• Write one or two critiques and reviews about a local art exhibition for publication in local, regional, and/or national platform
• Make recommendations for future gallery programming and assist with identifying a potential Curator-in-Residence for the following year
Minimum required qualifications:
• An MFA or MA in Art History, Museum Studies, or another relevant related field
• Demonstrated knowledge of a particular historical period, preferably modern and contemporary art
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills are essential
• Creative individual with the capacity to take initiative, work well independently as well as with a team, and adjust easily to an ever-changing, demanding, arts organization
• Minimum of five years’ experience as curator in an academic museum, non-profit or similar setting
• Proven records of publications
• Teaching experience is preferred

The Curator-in-Residence is a part-time, outside consultant position; his/her presence at the University is required for nine visits, four days each, over the one-year period. Payment as an outside consultant will be provide monthly, at $2,200 each month (total $26,400 for twelve months), based on completion of the tasks required. The Curator-in-Residence will be involved in all curatorial aspects during the residency and will have full administrative support from the The University of Maryland Art Gallery, the David C. Driskell Center, and the University of Maryland.
