JOB: African American Material Culture Studies/Public Humanities @ University of Delaware

The College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Delaware invites applications for multiple positions–open rank, but with a special interest in senior scholars–for a major initiative in African American Material Culture Studies and/or African American Public Humanities. Joint appointments or single-department appointments are available among the departments participating in this cluster hire, including the Departments of Africana Studies, Art History, English, and History–with established, rich interdisciplinary collaborations possible among and beyond these interconnected scholarly communities. Successful candidates will have a demonstrable commitment to inclusive excellence and diversity–including a readiness to contribute to ongoing efforts to recruit and retain under-represented students and faculty–and will have a strong record of excellence in scholarship and teaching in African American Material Culture and/or Public Humanities Studies, as well as a commitment to contributing to the development of initiatives in these fields at the University of Delaware.

The University of Delaware is home to several interdisciplinary centers and initiatives that have significant administrative and grant support. Particularly important for the positions we seek to fill are the Center for Material Culture Studies and the African American Public Humanities Initiative (AAPHI), an interdisciplinary graduate study project supported by a major NEH Next Generation grant and Luce Foundation funding. We are home as well to the award-winning Colored Conventions Project, a digital humanities initiative that is recovering the archives and mapping the history of the African American state and national convention movement in the nineteenth century. The Special Collections and Museums of the UD Library offer strong collections in African American art, literature, history and culture shared through exhibitions in the library and museums galleries–including the Paul R. Jones Collection of African American Art–and classes. These collections that are made available to all faculty and students upon request for group or individual study, with a dedicated postdoctoral position established to facilitate these efforts for our African American collections. We are also home to one of the world’s top art conservation programs. Through partnerships with the HBCU Library Alliance and the Alliance for HBCU Museums and Galleries, we are introducing HBCU students to careers in art conservation and allied fields while also working to preserve the rich cultural treasures in HBCU’s libraries, archives, and museums. Our Center for the Study of Diversity provides support and a collaborative community for faculty research, community initiatives, university programming, and administrative planning. Through these initiatives and institutional centers and many others, UD researchers and students have opportunities for local, national, and global collaborations and partnerships. Beyond UD, our faculty have access–supported by well-established institutional ties–to important regional archives, including the Winterthur Museum, Gardens & Libraries, Folger Library, Hagley Museum, The Library Company of Philadelphia, and the Smithsonian Institution, among many others.

JOB: Assistant Professor, specializing in Film, Media, or Visual Culture in Africana Studies @ University of Delaware

The Department of Africana Studies at the University of Delaware invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in film, digital/print media, and/or visual culture.  The area of specialization is open, but ideal candidates should demonstrate a critical engagement with film, media and visual studies from an Africana/ African American Studies perspective and be prepared to undertake rigorous research and innovative teaching in these areas.

The successful candidate will join an Africana Studies department comprised of engaged faculty with a strong research profile and a commitment to student-centered learning and community engagement.

Qualifications:

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree in African-American/Africana Studies, or a related field including but not limited to English, Communication, Film Studies, Art, and Art History. They must also demonstrate exceptional promise for excellence in research and scholarship, as well as a commitment to teaching.

Applicants who are ABD will also be considered, but must have their Ph.D. or terminal degree in hand by August 1, 2018.  The start date for this position is September 1, 2018.

JOB: Chief Curator (including African American Art collection), University Museums @ University of Delaware

Pay Grade: 32E

Reporting to the Director of Special Collections and Museums, the Chief Curator performs the following responsibilities:

  • Envision and implement an innovative exhibition program that supports the university’s educational mission and curriculum and enhances the University of Delaware’s standing as a cultural center. Collaborate with the Director and members of the Special Collections staff in development of long-range exhibition plan. Develop and oversee exhibition budgets.
  • Identify and recommend realizable exhibition ideas. Curate exhibitions for Old College Gallery and Mechanical Hall Gallery, and manage curatorial efforts of faculty, graduate students, museums staff, guest curators as well as incoming exhibitions. Oversee installation design and successful implementation.
  • Ensure excellent program communications. Write and edit a range of texts in conjunction with exhibitions, including but not limited to essays, labels, promotional texts and grant proposals. Oversee all exhibition publications, both print and electronic.
  • Identify area collectors and donor prospects and funding opportunities and develop relationships beneficial to the museums.
  • Provide leadership for University Museums department including supervision of 3.5 FTE positions and participation on the Library Management Council

Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in art history or related field and a minimum of five years curatorial experience in a museum setting or a master’s degree in art history or related field with 8 or more years curatorial experience in a museum setting.
  • Subject expertise and curatorial experience related to the strengths of the collection:  American art, 1900 to the present (including African American art); photography, prints and drawings
  • Substantial experience providing leadership and supervision.
  • Demonstrated creativity and success in presenting diverse collections of art in a manner that engages students and supports the curriculum.
  • Proven experience as a team leader with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Highly developed organizational skills with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills.
  • Desire to work with and engage students, faculty, donors, and members of the public.
  • Familiarity with Past Perfect and WordPress preferred

The recent merger of Special Collections and Museums at the University of Delaware Library brought together diverse collection of art, with special strengths in American art of the 20th century (especially prints, photographs and work by African American artists), European prints, Inuit art, Pre-Columbian art and minerals, with books, manuscripts, broadsides, periodicals, pamphlets, maps and ephemera from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century. Art exhibitions in Old College Gallery and Mechanical Hall Gallery, mineralogical exhibitions in Penny Hall, and exhibitions in the Morris Library engage students, scholars, the UD community and the general public.
