Professor of Practice in the Arts (Associate or Full) – Architectural Design/Theory

Description
The Department of Art History at the University of Chicago invites applications for a position as Professor of Practice in the Arts (Associate or Full) in Architectural Design/Theory and related areas. The expected start date of the position is July 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate will teach four courses per year on the quarter system in areas related to their expertise, and they will pursue their own creative and scholarly agenda. The initial appointment is for five years, which is renewable upon successful review.
We seek to fill our PPA opening with a practicing architect who is committed to undergraduate education and can discuss the role of the built environment in society with colleagues across the university, particularly those involved with the Committee on Environment, Geography and Urbanization, Chicago Studies, and the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation.
This search is part of an initiative to continue to build the Department of Art History’s Architectural Studies program, which offers both scholarly and studio-style courses to undergraduates. The PPA will serve as the Architectural Studies Advisor, collaborating with the Coordinator of the Architectural Studies Program and other faculty and lecturers who specialize in architectural design, practice, and theory. Together, they will identify and implement best practices related to teaching and advising to shape the present and future of the program. The selected candidate is expected to maintain profiles both in university instruction and in architecture design and practice.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will be actively involved in architectural debates, practice, and theory; possess experience teaching at the university level; and the ability or potential to be an excellent teacher and mentor to undergraduate students. We especially seek candidates who are well positioned to shape the future of architectural studies within the greater context of the arts and humanities.
All requirements for receipt of an M.Arch or Ph.D. in architecture or a related field must be completed prior to the start of the appointment.

JOB: Asst Prof, Art History @ Eastern Michigan University

The School of Art and Design at Eastern Michigan University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Art History, beginning August 2025. This position is part of a four-faculty cluster in Art History, Political Science, Sociology Anthropology and Criminology, and Arts Administration collaborating with the University’s new Civil Rights and Social Justice Center. We seek candidates from any specialization whose work aligns with the Center’s goals, with a preference for a focus on premodern art, globally defined. Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, the arts of Africa, the Islamic world (including the ancient Mediterranean and Near East), the Americas, or other regions that complement our existing faculty strengths. A museum studies background is also welcome.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will have a three courses per semester base teaching load, primarily art history courses including surveys and upper-level classes in their area of expertise, while actively engaging in—and helping to shape—the Civil Rights and Social Justice Center’s initiatives. A primary instructional responsibility will be to teach our ancient through medieval survey course, but the appointee is also encouraged to develop new courses and collaborate in a broader re-envisioning of the art history curriculum. They will have opportunities to participate in our College in Prison Program, intercollegiate collaborations with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), study abroad programs, and campus programming such as the EMU galleries, among others. The appointee will be expected to collaborate with faculty in the cluster from other disciplines and contribute to shaping a more equitable vision of the arts at EMU. We value candidates who can leverage these unique engagement opportunities to enrich their teaching and research while fostering community connections.

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Art History or a related field (completed by August 2025), with a preference for expertise in premodern art history, globally defined. Enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching, pedagogical creativity, and flexibility are essential, as is a commitment to working with students from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds.

JOB: Asst Prof, Black art and design @ School of the Art Institute of Chicago

The Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin in August of 2025. This full-time appointment
is for a historian of Black art and design. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the department’s continued diversification of intellectual conversations about art and design history. Program Profile
The Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism, one of 21 departments at the school, is composed of fourteen full-time art historians specializing in modern and contemporary art and design. Together with 50 part-

Responsibilities
Full-time faculty in Art History, Theory, and Criticism teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. Qualifications
Ph.D. or ABD is required. For ABD candidates, a clear path to Ph.D completion prior to joining the School must be evident. Some teaching experience preferred for junior candidates. Senior candidates must show evidence of substantial teaching experience. Evidence of ongoing research and continued publication trajectory expected. Preference will be given to candidates who relate modern and/or contemporary art and design to histories of Black culture. JOB: Associate Professor or Professor – Art and Visual Culture of the African Diaspora (full-time, tenure-track) @ Temple University

The Department of Art History in the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the Associate Professor or Professor rank specializing in the Art and Visual Culture of the African Diaspora, to start fall 2025.

Though the chronological parameters of research are flexible, the committee welcomes applicants whose teaching and scholarship are centered on cross-cultural encounters and exchanges—examining the ways in which art is produced and circulates through networks of trade and immigration, and how its discourse is formed by the dynamics of race, colonialism, post-colonialism, and globalization. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the department’s effort to decolonize curricula. Successful candidates will be expected to have and maintain a strong research agenda. Fellowship Opportunity: The Betsy James Wyeth Fellowship in Native American Art at SAAM (Applications due Oct. 15, 2024)

One fellowship will be awarded annually in support of a 12-month residency for a scholar at the predoctoral level or a 9-month appointment for a postdoctoral or senior-level researcher. Residencies must take place between June 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026, and begin on the 1st or 15th of the month. Housing is not provided.  

The Betsy James Wyeth Fellowship in Native American Art carries a stipend of $53,000 and an allowance of up to $5,000 for short research trips. Additional funds will be provided to help with the fellow’s health insurance premiums and travel to Washington, DC. The Smithsonian’s Office of International Relations will assist with arranging J-1 exchange visas for any recipients who require them
